Thirty Bible Verses that Mandate Wokeness
Social justice is the glue that holds Bible and faith together.
Social justice is the glue that holds Bible and faith together.
Woke values are as old as the Book of Genesis. Maybe even older!
The Bible rejects much of what is commonly called conservative evangelicalism: Specifically, its narcissism, unapologetic hypocrisy, and hostility to the people that Jesus and other prophets value most.
Indeed, the Bible celebrates the people that U.S. conservatives have cast out: Strangers, religious and social outcasts, immigrants, refugees, single women, eunuchs, the working poor, and people of different faiths.
Let’s briefly explore a cross-section of the Bible’s values.
To do that, let us ponder 30 passages from the Bible that consistently mandate divine social justice and sacred “woke” equity. Read and meditate on each passage:
Deuteronomy 1:16–17: And I charged your judges at that time: Hear the disputes between your brothers and judge fairly, whether the case is between brother Israelites or between one of them and an alien. Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of any man, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.
Deuteronomy 10:18: He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
Deuteronomy 16:20: Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Deuteronomy 24:17: You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow’s garment in pledge.
Deuteronomy 27:19: Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow.
Exodus 23:1–3: Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness. Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, and do not show favoritism to a poor man in his lawsuit.
Galatians 3:28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Habakkuk 1:4: Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.
Isaiah 1:17: Learn to do good; Seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.
James 1:27: Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Jeremiah 22:3: Thus says the Lord, “Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. Also do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place.”
Leviticus 19:15: Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.
Leviticus 24:22: You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God.
Luke 10:30–37: Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. And by chance a respected priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a respected Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, hated among you my listeners, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out a day’s wage and gave it to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’”
Matthew 22:39: The second is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 25:35–36: “For I was hungry, and you gave me food: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me.”
Matthew 25:40: The King will answer and say to them, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.”
Matthew 7:12: In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Micah 6:8: He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Proverbs 14:31: He who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, but he who is gracious to the needy honors Him.
Proverbs 22:16: He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
Proverbs 28:27: He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.
Proverbs 29:7: The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor, the wicked does not understand such concern.
Proverbs 31:9: Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.
Proverbs 6:16–19: There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
Psalm 33:5: The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.
Psalm 82:3: Vindicate the weak and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
Romans 10:12: For there is no difference between Jew and one of another faith — the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.
Romans 12:15–18: Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Zechariah 7:9–10: This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.”
When we see a Christian berating and demonizing others as bogeymen, may we think of these verses — and do as the Bible does: Hold that person accountable for the sin of gossip against our neighbors.
